Every summer for the past 14 years, Long Island City has played host to what is consistently rated as one of the best dance parties in NYC. Of course we’re talking about that afternoon-into-night weekly festival of delight called MoMA PS1 Warm Up, held in the fantastic courtyard of the fantastic MoMA PS1. If you've been before, you're already psyched for Warm Up 2012’s July 7 start date: it'll be the same as ever, but different as ever, too. For the uninitiated or for those of you new to the Long Island City neighborhood (and: welcome!), here's what you need to know about MoMA PS1 Warm Up summertime dance party...
Warm up 2012 Dancing in New York City with MoMA PS1
MoMA PS1 Warm Up begins this year on Saturday, July 7, and continues every Saturday thereafter, all the way through September 8. That's TEN pretty-much-guaranteed-excellent NYC dance parties, featuring lots of beer, plenty of snacks, cool design (more on that in a second), interesting art (the MoMA PS1 museum remains open and is part of the fun throughout the festivities), and, most important, a large, good-looking crowd dressed for dancing in New York City and playing in the hot summertime sun. Really, PS1 summer Warm Up is fun and exciting even if all you do is sit and watch! Other than your fellow Warm Up 2012 revelers, the next two best things about PS1 MoMA Warm Up are 1) the music, a line-up each week that has it all: experimental live music and sound, some sort of usually-weird performance, and, of course, the best DJs around. Past PS1 Warm Up party spinners and bands have included such hall-of-famers as Delorean, Animal Collective, ?uestlove, James Murphy, Scissor Sisters, Steinski, Four Tet, Das Racist, and Kenny Dope. AND, 2) the installation in the courtyard, courtesy of the winner of that year's Young Architect's Program competition.
Wendy & MoMA PS1 Warm Up 2012
The 2012 PS1 MoMA courtyard will be dominated by "Wendy,” a massive, spiky structure designed by HWKN, made of a nylon fabric treated with something called "titania nanoparticle spray" which actually neutralizes air pollution. In fact, during the run of MoMA PS1 Warm Up 2012, say MoMA PS1 sources, "Wendy will clean the air to an equivalent of taking 260 cars off the road.” Very cool. Also very cool: you can climb up inside Wendy, or hang around outside and get blasted by one of the creature's hidden water cannons! All the information currently available about MoMA PS1 Warm Up 2012 is on the museum's website. The full slate of Warm Up 2012 performers should be released around Memorial Day. And Wendy is, of course, available for viewing all throughout the summer, not just on Warm Up days... but it's more fun to share her with hundreds of other partygoers.
